The following is quoted from the internet:
Echizen Washi (Echizen paper) is a representative Japanese paper with a 1500-year history, made in Echizen City (formerly Imadate Town), Fukui Prefecture, and is one of the Three Great Japanese Washi Papers. Made from raw materials such as kozo (mulberry), mitsumata (oriental paperbush), and ganpi (oriental paperbush), it is characterized by its durability, beauty, and diversity. It is widely used from court documents to modern art and crafts, and even in space development. Echizen Torinoko paper and Echizen Hosho are particularly famous and have been designated as Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
Features and History
Long History: Records remain from the Nara period, and it still exists in the Shosoin repository. In the Heian period, art and craft paper was produced, and in the Muromachi and Edo periods, it developed under the protection of the shogunate and was adopted as the paper for Japan's first paper currency.
Raw Materials and Manufacturing Method: Torinoko paper, made from ganpi, is smooth, glossy, and resistant to insect damage. The technique of nagashizuki (flow-through straining) using the root of tororo aoi as neri (a mucilaginous substance) is used, and various techniques have been developed.
Diverse Types: It ranges from Echizen Hosho (for official documents) to art and craft paper (such as Uchigumo and Sumi-nagashi), fusuma paper, wallpaper, and modern functional materials.
Production Area: The Goka district of Echizen City is a particularly famous production area for handmade washi paper and is passed down as the Sato of Echizen Washi (Village of Echizen Washi).
