Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, by Johannes Vermeer, a leading painter of 17th-century Holland, is an early masterpiece that established Vermeer's style, featuring his depiction of light streaming through a window and a woman reading a letter indoors. An X-ray examination in 1979 revealed a painting within the painting of Cupid on the wall that had been painted over. For many years, it was believed that Vermeer himself had erased it. However, the latest research results, announced in 2019, indicate that the painting within the painting was erased by someone after Vermeer's death.
This exhibition will showcase Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window in its original form as painted by Vermeer, with the Cupid painting-within-a-painting revealed through a large-scale restoration project. This is the first time it will be displayed outside of its home institution, the Gem?ldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. In addition, approximately 70 other masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including works by Rembrandt, Metsu, and van Ruisdael, from the museum's collection will also be exhibited.
