Royal Copenhagen Year Plate 1987 Winter Birds

Royal Copenhagen's year plates have been produced for over 100 years, starting with the first edition in 1908, surviving through both World Wars.
Loved by people worldwide, they feature beautiful and familiar motifs, becoming plates that remain in memory along with the year they were made.
Each plate is hand-painted, resulting in subtle differences.

This item is the Royal Copenhagen Year Plate Winter Birds, sold in 1987 (Showa 62 in Japan).

Children are happily feeding winter birds. Denmark's lakes and streams are home to many types of birds, and when snow covers the ground, their food becomes buried. Perhaps the bread given by the children is a Christmas feast for the birds.
One-third of Denmark is made up of islands, supporting a variety of wild birds, and bird feeding is so common that there are even specialty bird feeder shops! Wild birds and nature seem to be an integral part of people's lives.
Perhaps Sven Vestergaard chose this scene as a motif to remind us of the birds during the cold winter.
