Wakasa Washi is handmade Japanese paper produced in the Watada district of Obama City, Fukui Prefecture.
It possesses a simple texture and remarkable strength that withstands even immersion in water.
* This is a single sheet made from 100% kozo (mulberry bark).
* The paper is made by draining and is in its natural state, without any bleaching or other processing. Please note that the size, paper quality, color, fiber coarseness, and the state of kozo bark inclusion may vary between products.
* It will be shipped folded in half.

The history of Wakasa Washi is ancient, with its manufacturing techniques said to have been introduced during the Enryaku era (782-806). It is believed that production flourished during the reign of Obama feudal lord Sakai Tadakatsu (1634-1656), who encouraged the cultivation of kozo and mitsumata (oriental paperbush), and it developed as a home-based handicraft.
Today, only a few households, primarily in Watada, continue to make paper.
The paper quality is pure, excellent, and strong. Wakasa Washi is reportedly used for the lanterns at the Kaminarimon Gate of Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa.
