Basket-Covered Inuhariko (Paper Mache Dog)
Inuhariko are said to protect children.
Dogs are said to be honest and ward off evil spirits, protecting the household and alerting to danger when away from home.
When a baby cries at night, has tantrums, or seizures, it is said that Kanshi-mushi (imaginary bugs) are acting up. The basket is said to be placed on the dog as a charm to seal away the bugs.
