Why Kagami Mochi is Displayed
It is to welcome the Toshigami-sama (New Year's deity) who visits homes at the start of the year, and as a yorishiro (object that invites the deity) where their spirit resides, to wish for the family's health and prosperity. It is considered a place where the deity resides. The round mochi, resembling a mirror (Yata no Kagami), symbolizes accumulating good fortune and growing old in harmony. Finally, by eating it during the Kagami Biraki (mirror opening ceremony) to share the power of the Toshigami-sama, it is an ancient Japanese ritual and culture to pray for good health throughout the year.
