New Year's Eve Yasaka Shrine Okera Mairi Lucky Charm Rope
New Year's Eve Yasaka Shrine Lucky Rope for Okera Pilgrimage
Okera Pilgrimage
A winter tradition in Kyoto on New Year's Eve. After the Joya-sai (New Year's Eve festival) on December 31st, the Okera fire lit from the Okera lantern is kept burning throughout the night. The custom of Okera Pilgrimage is to light a torch rope (lucky rope) with this Okera fire, and then, while twirling the rope to keep the flame alive, carry it home to pray for good health and longevity, using it as kindling for the ancestral shrine's lamps or for cooking the New Year's zoni soup. The remaining burnt rope is enshrined in the kitchen as a charm against fire (protection from fire disasters).
