[Product Description]
The history of Hagoita (New Year's paddle) dates back to the Muromachi period.
Ward off evil: The black ball at the tip of the hane (feather) used in Hagoita is the seed of the mukuroji (soapberry) tree. In kanji, it is written as 無患子, meaning no illness for children, and has been considered a charm for children's health and well-being.
Mosquito repellent: The flying hane is likened to a dragonfly that eats mosquitoes, symbolizing the wish for children to be free from mosquito bites (and thus illness) during the summer.
Traditional craft: In the Edo period, the oshi-e technique, which creates three-dimensional representations of Kabuki actors, developed, establishing the current gorgeous decorative style.
