Rattan is a tropical vine plant of the palm family, known as rattan in English. It is 100% imported material, not grown in Japan. Many people mistake it for bamboo at first glance, but its properties are completely different.
There are many varieties, with thicknesses ranging from about 2mm to over 6cm, and lengths reaching up to 200 meters, making it said to be the longest plant on Earth.
Despite challenges such as rising prices and a shortage of successors, the value of traditional crafts is being re-evaluated amidst a strong demand for the benefits of natural materials and assured quality.
We continue to explore new demands suited to modern life.
