A storm glass is a weather predictor used by sailors and others in the 19th century.
It is made by sealing camphor (camphor tree extract), ethanol, etc., in a glass tube, and was used to observe the crystals that form in response to changes in climate.
It is also installed in the Nautilus in Jules Verne's novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
As science developed, it became clear that the crystallization phenomenon is largely a mystery, and the details are still under research.
