Tendaishū
A school of Buddhism founded in China by Zhiyi of the Sui Dynasty.
It is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism that advocates the theory of five periods and eight teachings based on the doctrines of the Lotus Sutra, and teaches that one can attain Buddhahood quickly through meditation.
The doctrines of the Tendai school were established through Zhiyi's writings, Lotus Sutra Essentials, Lotus Sutra Commentary, and Great Calm and Contemplation (The Three Great Treatises).
In Japan, Grand Master Saichō traveled to Tang China in 804 AD, received the transmission of the Dharma from Master Daosui of Mount Tiantai's Guoqing Temple, and returned to Japan the following year to propagate it.
Centered around Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, it produced numerous excellent monks and formed a major force in Japanese Buddhism.
