Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage Goshoin Hanging Scroll (Unmounted) Fudo Myoo Triad
Price reduced. This is quite painful for me...
This item holds sentimental value, so please read the long description.
A complete hanging scroll featuring 88 temples plus one extra (Koyasan Okunoin) for a total of 89 temple seals (goshuin). The artwork is a rare depiction of Fudo Myoo.
This unique scroll features Fudo Myoo in the center, flanked by his attendants, Karura Doji and Seitaka Doji. Fudo Myoo, the wrathful deity with flames symbolizing purification, is depicted with fierce, wide-open eyes and biting his lip, embodying the power of Dainichi Nyorai's manifestation to destroy all obstacles. He has been deeply popular since ancient times.
This is for those who are too far away or too busy to travel themselves, or who have visited but not yet obtained the goshuin. Similar to dotting the eyes of a Daruma doll upon election victory, completing the scroll yourself signifies the final accomplishment. The person who mounted the scroll is considered its completer. I wish to pass this on to someone who will appreciate it with their chosen design.
This item was obtained through a proxy pilgrimage and has been carefully stored for over 10 years. It is in good condition with no discoloration or yellowing. Please examine the close-up images from the top to check for any fine details.
The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage is something many wish to do at least once in their lifetime. However, the financial and time costs are significant. A walking pilgrimage takes 40-45 days, and with expenses for accommodation, food, temple offerings, and donations, even a low estimate would require at least 500,000 yen.
Accommodation costs are also rising. In addition to the pilgrimage attire (hakui, wagesa, kongozue), a goshuincho (temple seal book), and a hanging scroll can cost at least 20,000-30,000 yen even for basic ones. The fee for each goshuin on a hanging scroll is 700 yen. The cost of this hanging scroll itself was 25,000 yen, and the goshuin fees alone amounted to 62,300 yen.
Each temple has both a main hall and a Daishi hall, requiring offerings at 176 locations. It's also a hassle, but after receiving a goshuin, you must leave the scroll open until the ink dries. If you close it too soon, the ink may smudge or bleed onto blank areas, resulting in an unsightly finish. Drying time of 20-30 minutes is absolutely necessary, especially for hanging scrolls, as you will deeply regret it later if you don't leave it fully open to dry. If you are in a hurry to visit many places, it is more time-efficient to purchase the goshuin separately and move on quickly.
Please consider all the various costs and time commitments before making a decision.
The main body of the scroll is free of dirt and stains, but there are erased marks of a name on the backing paper. The backing paper is discarded during mounting, so this is not recommended for those who are particularly sensitive.
