The Nutcracker Doll and the Mouse King Exhibition
~Treasures of Fairy Tales~
Pamphlet
This is a pamphlet from the exhibition held from Saturday, May 31, 2014, to Sunday, May 17, 2015.
Below is the content of the exhibition.
Do you know the true story of The Nutcracker Doll?
The story of The Nutcracker Doll, which is widely known through Tchaikovsky's music, is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written about 200 years ago by the German author Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. This story, filled with fantastical and mysterious descriptions, unfolds with reality and fantasy overlapping, blurring the lines between them.
Director Miyazaki was captivated by the power of this story, which appeals to young girls, after encountering the picture book The Nutcracker Doll (published by Tokuma Shoten). He reread the picture book and the original story many times. Then, inspired by the idea that this is a 'treasure of fairy tales', he planned an exhibition to convey the mysterious charm of The Nutcracker Doll to children.
In this exhibition, Director Miyazaki interprets the story from various angles and introduces it through exhibition panels he personally drew. Furthermore, the exhibition room features a large diorama modeled after a ballet stage and affectionate illustrations by Alison Jay, the illustrator of the picture book The Nutcracker Doll, inviting children into the world of the story. We will also introduce the roots of the story's key character, the Nutcracker Doll itself, and plan to allow visitors to actually crack walnuts.
Enjoy the mysterious charm of this story, as interpreted by Director Miyazaki, a world of fairy tales like sparkling treasures delivered from the author Hoffmann to children blessed with free imagination.
