Winner of the 2023 Booker International Prize!
A masterpiece by the Bulgarian George Orwell that sounds the alarm on nostalgia.

A mysterious wanderer, Gaustine, opens a clinic for the past. Here, for dementia patients, each floor meticulously recreates a different era, sending patients back into their own memories. The narrator, an assistant, continues to gather fragments of lost times, such as 1960s furniture, 1940s shirt buttons, scents, and even the afternoon light. However, as the recreated past rooms become too elaborate, even healthy people become consumed by nostalgia, seeking refuge from the horrors of the present. Eventually, the past ceases to be a sanctuary and becomes an entity that encroaches upon the present.
