Exhibition Description:
Art Brut is a term coined by the 20th-century French artist Jean Dubuffet, meaning raw art. It refers to the free and uninhibited expressions of artists, regardless of whether they have disabilities or have received formal art education, and who are not bound by existing art trends or popular styles. With their colorful palettes, bold lines, and unique focus on text and everyday objects, these works, filled with original ideas and the joy of creation, remind us how constrained we are by conventional art. This exhibition is the triumphant return to Japan of the ART BRUT JAPONAIS exhibition, which captivated over 120,000 visitors at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris from March 2010 to January of the following year. The powerful energy and rich expressions emanating from the works of 63 artists, totaling over 600 pieces, will surely make us feel the origins and joy of creativity. In collaboration with organizations and facilities in Kochi that are dedicated to Art Brut, including the Warakoh Museum which opened in 2011, we will introduce the charm of Art Brut.
