Dokonjo Gaeru (The Gutsy Frog), which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump for six years from July 1970 to June 1976, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020.
The TV anime began airing in 1972, followed by Shin Dokonjo Gaeru in 1980. It is a masterpiece that truly represents the Showa era. Its popularity has not waned, with a TV drama adaptation in 2015 and appearances in commercials, continuing to be loved across generations.

This book features a carefully selected collection of 17 works from the period 1970-1976, originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump and compiled in Jump Comics (27 volumes).
The selection includes: the debut one-shot work first published in a magazine, the first installment of the serialization, episodes that strongly feature Pyonkichi's character and traits, works that author Yasumi Yoshizawa has cited as favorites, the first appearance of popular characters, the beginning of the love rivalry between Mr. Minami and Ume-san over Yoshiko-sensei, episodes that serve as the origin of familiar scenes for Dokonjo Gaeru fans, and the original stories of works that were popular in the anime adaptation. These 17 works have been chosen from various perspectives.
