● Product Information
This is a documentary film meticulously completed by director Steven Okazaki over 25 years, who previously won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for Days of Waiting.
Although memories of the atomic bombings are fading in Japan more than 60 years after the event, many people around the world are still largely unaware of the reality of the damage. In America, the so-called atomic bomb myth that the atomic bombs ended the war early and saved many lives of both Japanese and American people is widely accepted.
This film is structured around the testimonies of 14 atomic bomb survivors and 4 Americans involved in the dropping of the atomic bombs. Among them is Keiji Nakazawa, the author of Barefoot Gen, whose life was profoundly shaped by director Okazaki. Despite well over half a century having passed since the tragedy, their testimonies remain vividly raw and deeply disturbing. This serves as irrefutable evidence of how abhorrent nuclear weapons are. Interspersed with valuable archival footage and materials, this film comprehensively depicts the truth of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, confronting the unimaginable suffering of the survivors and deeply acknowledging their courage and dignity in living.
It is said that there are currently enough nuclear weapons in the world to equal 400,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs. Since 9/11, the threat of nuclear proliferation has rapidly increased along with global tensions, raising concerns about the possibility of mass destruction by nuclear weapons becoming a reality. In this context, the film was broadcast nationwide in the United States on August 6, 2007, the very day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The film, which was also specially screened at the United Nations, serves to inform not only Americans but people worldwide about what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, sounding a strong alarm against the threat of nuclear weapons.
