Gagaku Sho (Reed Organ) - Genuine Soot-Smoked Bamboo - Irregular Grain
Thank you for viewing.
This is a sho made of hon-susudake, which is now very rare, although it has irregular nodes. The total length is a relatively short 422mm, making it an easy-to-handle instrument, significantly reducing the risk of hitting the tip. As this is a thick sho, it may be difficult for those with small hands. Each bamboo piece is very thick and sturdy, with taut nodes. However, due to its thickness, the bamboo had to be excessively shaved off on both sides, requiring lacquer reinforcement in various places. The character 七 is inscribed on the sides of all bamboo pieces; it is unclear if this is a serial number. The mirror appears to be made of buffalo horn, suggesting it is an old instrument. The head has no noticeable lacquer cracks or peeling and is relatively clean for an old instrument. There are some minor dents on the upper part of the bi-take and two nodes (see the last photo, the 20th image).
The sound is difficult to describe, but as both the instrument and reeds are old, if modern shos are digital, this could be described as analog – a mellow sound. There is no noticeable air leakage.
Work performed (November, Reiwa 7)
○ Basic washing, tuning, and cleaning
○ Lacquer reinforcement on sides of bamboo pieces: 十, 一, 工, 凢, 比
○ Replacement of 千 reed (due to being too light)
○ Shaving of bamboo near the finger hole of the lower bamboo (to prevent contact when pressing 乙)
○ Shaving of the lower part of the 行 finger hole
○ Adjustment of several points on the boat bottom and surface (due to being too shallow)
○ Adjustment of several points on the屏 (hei)
○ Tightening and adjustment of the帯 (obi)
○ Alcohol disinfection inside the head (a faint scent of alcohol remains but will dissipate over time)
Please understand that the above work was performed according to my personal sound preferences and subjective judgment.
