Shinobue (Japanese bamboo flute) - Classical style, 7 holes, 7th key (hon-chōshi)
Roasted bamboo, transparent finish, Negishi Shinobue Studio
I played this flute for about 5 minutes after purchasing it, and it's very easy to play even for beginners.
I originally got it for use at work, but ended up not using it, so I would like to pass it on to someone who will cherish it.
Thickness: Approximately 17.8 mm at the mouthpiece
Length: Approximately 51.5 cm
Mouthpiece opening: Approximately 14 mm
Thickness: Slightly on the thinner side
Wall thickness: 2 out of 5 levels
(Thicker walls produce better high notes and resonance, while thinner walls are easier to play)
Pitch: Slightly less than 8th key (hachi-hon-jakuri)
Range: Beautifully resonates from the lowest note (just barely Ro-on) up to Daikō-on 5.
This flute is made to the same specifications as the Shishida and Maruyama shinobue.
It is easy to play and produces excellent Daikō-on (high notes).
Most beginners can play low notes, but struggle with high notes or very high peeping sounds. Many are unsure if their current flute can produce these notes properly.
This flute was made based on feedback from instructors across various regions (focusing on ease of playing high notes, clear Daikō-on, and affordability).
Beginners are generally advised to buy a more affordable flute first, and once they can play high and Daikō-on, to visit a shop and try out flutes in person to find one that suits them. (Some flutes look good but don't produce clear Daikō-on). It's also said that progress is faster if you start lessons once you can produce some sound.
To prioritize ease of playing, resonance, and affordability, there may be minor scratches, natural variations in shape, natural patterns, or slight natural bends.
What is roasted bamboo? It is the material among shinobue bamboo that produces the best resonance. Roasting bamboo thoroughly until the core makes it harder and improves its resonance. However, it is difficult to process due to the scarcity of suitable materials.
It is also characterized by even better resonance when made in its natural state. Bamboo grows by competing for sunlight. Therefore, bamboo that wins this competition for light is ideal for flutes.
What is a transparent finish? Since no pigments are used in the paint, it makes the flute easier to play. Furthermore, by carving grooves inside and allowing the paint to soak in, it further enhances playability and resonance.
