Held at the Yamato Bunkakan in Nara Prefecture.
Special Exhibition on Waka Poetry and Letters.

This exhibition showcases works related to waka poetry and letters, which have been used as means of conveying emotions since ancient times, selected from the collection of the Yamato Bunkakan.
Waka poetry and art have been deeply intertwined and loved together, as seen in calligraphy by ancient people and paintings depicting tales of waka, as well as portraits of waka poets like Kasen-ga.
Furthermore, letters have been treasured as they reveal the individuality of the person who wrote them. Some letters occasionally contain details about the writer's physical condition or state of mind, offering a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of people in ancient times.
The National Treasure Byobu: Women's Amusement, also affectionately known as the Matsuura Screen due to its transmission through the Hirado Matsuura family, depicts women writing letters. Not only that, but it also portrays women receiving and reading letters, suggesting that letters were an important motif in the Matsuura Screen. This exhibition explores the aspects of waka poetry and letters, through which people have conveyed their emotions, using works of art.
