Archaeological artifacts, historical documents, and art crafts that convey the culture and thoughts of our predecessors have been protected and passed down through the hands of many people to this day, allowing us to witness them. This means that whether the cultural properties before us can continue to breathe for the next hundred years rests on us now.
Since its establishment in 1991, the Sumitomo Foundation has considered it the responsibility of contemporary people to pass down cultural properties, which are the common treasures of humanity, to future generations, and has strived to provide grants for the maintenance and restoration of cultural properties. From a private sector standpoint, we have been active for 35 years, expanding our grant support not only to cultural properties in Japan but also overseas.
This exhibition aims to shed light on the environment, techniques, and people involved in the preservation and restoration of cultural properties by showcasing those that have been revived through repairs funded by the Sumitomo Foundation's grant program. Cultural properties are facing increasingly difficult circumstances due to an aging society, depopulation in rural areas, a shortage of people involved in cultural properties, strained finances, and increasingly severe natural disasters. How can cultural property restoration, which involves multiple people collaborating on a single work, using carefully selected materials generously, and constantly seeking the best through a combination of traditional and cutting-edge techniques, survive in today's society that emphasizes cost performance based on mass consumption? We hope to re-convey the significance and techniques of cultural property restoration, as well as the efforts of the people involved, so as not to be overwhelmed and paralyzed by the numerous challenges.
*This exhibition will not tour to Izumiya Hakubutsukan Tokyo.
