Mission: Impossible Tape Recorder

This is a replica of the small open-reel tape recorder used by Jim to receive instructions from the authorities at the beginning of the American TV drama Mission: Impossible, which aired in the 1960s and 70s. It is powered by 4 AA batteries. However, current alkaline batteries will not fit in the battery compartment. Please use manganese batteries. The main unit is made of robust die-cast metal, but the battery compartment is made of plastic and is prone to damage, so please be extra careful when inserting or removing batteries. The unit is powered by batteries only.

The unit does not have a built-in microphone. To record audio, connect an external microphone to the unit's terminal. I performed a recording operation with the included genuine microphone just before listing, and it recorded successfully. Playback and rewind functions have also been confirmed. Two episodes of the instruction audio from the beginning of the drama have been recorded on the tape as a sample. The playback sound has some distortion, so minor adjustments with the tape speed adjustment dial may be necessary. Please do not expect high-quality sound like modern equipment, as this is a device from about 60 years ago. Future operation cannot be guaranteed. It is sold as is (junk).

This is a used item and is subject to age. There are scuffs, dents, fading, and dirt, but it has been stored in a leather case, so I subjectively feel it is in relatively good condition. The hinges at both ends of the lid had cracks, which have been reinforced with instant adhesive. It is advisable not to apply excessive force when opening or closing. The dimensions of the unit (cm) are: width 14 x depth 9 x height 5.5 (excluding protrusions), and the weight is approximately 750g (excluding batteries). The listing includes the main unit, two 2.5-inch reels with tape attached, one spare tape, the genuine included microphone, a leather hard case, a hand strap, and a shoulder strap. There is no box or instruction manual, but operating instructions are written in English on the underside of the upper lid. When opening the lid or removing the battery box (while pressing the button on the side of the unit), it may be stiff, so gently pry it open with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.

The delivery method is RakuRaku Mercari便. The ruler, AA manganese batteries, and the final reference image shown in the pictures are not included in the listing.
This is an old item. There is a significant possibility of future failures such as deterioration of electronic boards and components, lifespan of the drive motor, deterioration or breakage of the tape, etc. Recommended for those who can repair, adjust, or restore it. It may also be suitable for parts.
