The features of these speakers, besides their cute design, are the coaxial drivers (Image 2). Coaxial drivers are said to be expensive to produce and difficult to design, so it's a testament to JBL that they were able to release them at a price point of just under 20,000 yen at the time.

The compact size and the detented volume knob on the front of the master speaker are a subtle but welcome touch, offering intuitive operation with thoughtful design.
While the sound aims for a flat response, it has a slightly mid-range forward impression. The high frequencies are not harsh on the ears, and the bass feels more like a slight boost in quantity rather than a true extension of the low-frequency range.
This may not be ideal for critical monitoring, but if that's what you're after, you'd likely consider other speakers. These seem to be designed as approachable entry-level monitors.

On the other hand, the stereo imaging is excellent for this price range, with no unevenness in the soundstage. The ability to experience the benefits of coaxial drivers alone makes them worth the price. For those starting out with mixing or composition, acquiring speakers that provide good stereo imaging for both production and listening is a wise choice. It's a logically designed product when you consider that JBL likely incorporated coaxial drivers with this in mind, tuning them for enjoyable listening while designing the 104 as an affordable entry-level or secondary monitor.
