What are flash cards?
Flash cards are an educational method for instant memorization of information. It is one of the methods that can be started even from infancy when children cannot read. Flash cards are cards about A5 size, with illustrations on the front and their names on the back.
There are various types, such as living things like animals, birds, and insects, everyday objects like household items, fruits, and musical instruments, dot cards for recognizing numbers with dots, and hiragana, numbers, English, clocks, and proverbs. There are also cards that children will love, such as working vehicles and limited express trains/Shinkansen.
Flash Cards
When using flash cards, you show the child the illustration and simultaneously say its name, then repeat the same process for the next card. This allows for simultaneous recognition of visual information (illustrations) and auditory information (words).
The key is the speed of flipping. Just like a camera flash, the cards are flipped one after another at high speed, less than one second per card. It is said that by doing so, the left brain, which is responsible for language and logical thinking, cannot keep up, and information processing by the right brain, which excels at visual comprehension, is prioritized.
In addition to the standard usage, their popularity also stems from the ability to apply them in various ways, such as showing a card and asking for its name, or spreading out several cards and grouping them.
It is said that the best age to start using flash cards is for preschool children aged 0 to 5 or 6. By exposing them to a large amount of high-quality information during their infancy, when their brains are rapidly developing, it is believed that the latent areas of the right brain, which are not typically used much, will blossom.
After the age of 3, children gradually begin to think more with their left brain, and by the age of 5 or 6, their brain usage shifts significantly to be left-brain dominant. Therefore, it is best to start as early as possible.
