May 5, 1859, Ueda-za Theater Opening Performance, Yokohama Tournament

Kabuki Pro-Wrestling, considered the precursor to modern deathmatches.

After entering the ring to shamisen accompaniment, the wrestlers brandish their chosen deathmatch items.

A battle of men fighting for the three-count.

The match concludes with Gon'emon igniting a torch, wrapping it around his body, and executing the Gon'emon Splash (Fire Splash).

This is a commemorative tournament T-shirt from the moment deathmatches were added to Edo's entertainment.

The audience member (wearing green) rushing the ring is also a scene unique to Edo.
