● Alesis 3630 Compressor Modified Unit - Legendary Machine

● This is a modified Alesis 3630 Compressor.

◯ It's a 1U size, 2-channel unit with a compressor and gate combination. The internal circuitry is very simple, with only an input buffer, VCA, and output buffer in the signal path, resulting in very high sound quality.

◯ You can switch between Peak and RMS (average value) modes. Use Peak for firmly controlling the attack of drums, and RMS for a natural compression effect when applied to the overall mix.

◯ The sound quality is wonderfully natural, with almost no change in tone even when reducing by about 20dB, making it hard to tell if it's even engaged. With its 2-channel specification, it's versatile for use on snare and kick, vocals and bass, or as a master compressor in both recording and live settings. Its minimal tonal coloration and compact, lightweight design make it convenient for live performances and recording.

◯ Modifications include replacing the power supply diodes and capacitors, using metal film resistors for the signal path, replacing capacitors with high-quality tantalum ones, and upgrading the op-amps to the fast, high-quality National Semiconductor LME49740.

◯ The gate has been modified with a switchable potentiometer to allow bypassing. When the gate knob is turned all the way to zero, it clicks and bypasses the gate circuit.

◯ This unit is highly popular as a classic piece of equipment in the US, with modification kits even being sold. It has been recreated as the VST plugin NightShine, and numerous articles can be found online. One website even ranked it 20th among the all-time best compressors, alongside legendary units like the Fairchild 670 and Urei 1176.

◯ Accessories include a generic power supply and a custom-made sidechain filter. The sidechain filter prevents the compressor from reacting to low frequencies, resulting in a more natural compression when used on a 2-mix.
