Drawbacks of Neeve-kun:
The volume doubles simply by passing through, which can lead to the illusion that the sound has improved. In reality, the difference is so small that it's barely noticeable even in blind tests.
Neeve-kun is a copy of the NEVE 1073 input mic transformer section, so the input impedance is too low for line input, and it cannot be used with condenser microphones due to phantom power incompatibility, making its specifications somewhat ambiguous.

It is said that the secret to the sound of vintage NEVE lies in its transformers. The somewhat degraded sound quality after passing through the transformer is highly regarded as musical. The original transformers used in NEVE, Marinair, are still manufactured today as OEP/Carnhill. The vintage (Carnhill) reprint is available for around 60 euros, and the current model (OEP) makes excellent transformers for about 5000 yen. (The current model can be purchased domestically, but the reprint is only available through import.) I have created three versions using the current model, the reprint, and a lucky find of a vintage unit, and the sound quality was indeed best in the order of vintage, reprint, and current model. Since it only passes through an audio transformer, the sound quality change is extremely subtle. The sound does not change drastically like with an effect pedal.
