8cm Full-Range Fostex M800 DIY Bass Reflex Enclosure

Fostex 8cm Full-Range Speaker, Model M800, in a Set of 2 Cute, Compact Speakers.
Body: 15mm and 21mm (bottom) Siberian Larch Core.

Dimensions: Width: 130mm, Depth: 185mm, Height: 270mm
Weight: Approx. 1.4kg

The M800 unit used was specially made for the August 2016 issue of stereo magazine by Ongaku no Tomo Sha, and gained attention as Fostex's first metal cone speaker. It was sold by Ontomo Shop and is still available for purchase as a pair.
(This unit was also purchased from there.)
Detailed specifications can be found on their website. The cone and center cap are made of aluminum.

This unit is a modification of the manufacturer's standard bass-reflex enclosure featured in the magazine at the time, with the pipe duct replaced by a slit duct.
The grille guard K308P (plastic) is a spare part for the Fostex FE83. Due to a slight difference (approx. 0.2mm) in the corners, it did not fit the grille, so I used a soldering iron to melt the plastic and fit it in. (This is not visible from the outside.) I wish the manufacturer had been more considerate (Photos 13 & 14).
However, this should provide peace of mind for households with children, as the cone paper will not be a target.

After sanding, the finish is:
Water-based matte paint (Kansai Paint's Matt Colors, Soft Ivory) applied with a roller in three coats.

Enjoy the comparative listening after completion:
1. With the compact bass-reflex BS-8 designed by Tetsuo Nagaoka (equipped with Fostex P800k), the sound tendency is almost the same, but this unit has more low-frequency volume due to its larger capacity.
2. Compared to a double bass-reflex enclosure with the P800k, contrary to expectations, there was no discernible difference in low frequencies, and this unit is superior due to its smaller size.
3. Compared to a self-made standard bass-reflex enclosure equipped with the larger FE103En, the difference in efficiency is significant. Switching from the 103 with a selector results in a sad drop in volume. However, by increasing the amplifier's volume, it plays at a sufficient volume. Especially for chamber music and female vocals, you can feel a surprisingly lifelike presence. The high frequencies are as beautiful as rumored.
