The wood is genuine boxwood (Satsuma boxwood). It's developing a nice color.

It's almost entirely straight-grained (masame). While it could be considered straight-grained as there are no quarter-sawn (itame) patterns resembling bamboo shoots, strictly speaking, the right corner (left in image 12) might be classified as quarter-sawn rather than straight-grained.

Personally, I prefer the diagonal grain pattern resembling a dragon on the left (tsuimase) over perfectly straight grain.

For pieces in the popular price range, the carved areas are polished with sandpaper after the lacquer is applied and polished. However, the polishing and chamfering of the sword tip, sides, and base are often omitted, resulting in a rough feel. I have polished these areas to improve the texture.

I've been careful not to over-polish the carved areas, ensuring that the tips of strokes, flicks, and turns remain sharp and lines don't become too thin. I've removed any lacquer, filler (glue, varnish), or dirt that adhered during production, aiming for a smoother feel.

I prefer pieces with a sharp appearance, so the chamfering is shallow.

There are no noticeable scratches or stains.
