Yamagami Saku Kishu Sho Tsumage Carved Chess Pieces Shogi Pieces

The wood is boxwood, specifically Siamese boxwood.

The font name is usually Kishu, but it is written as Kisu. Another set of Kishu pieces made by Yamajo is also listed on Mercari, and it's interesting how the to kin (gold piece) is completely different. I thought perhaps other fonts were mixed in by mistake, but I researched it and found that both have been sold in the past.

For pieces in the popular price range, the carved areas are sanded down after the lacquer is applied, but the polishing and chamfering of the tips, sides, and bases are omitted, resulting in a rough feel, so I have polished them.

I have carefully polished the carved areas, paying attention not to over-polish and round off the tips of the starting strokes, sweeps, and flicks, or thin the lines. I have removed lacquer, filler (glue, varnish), and dirt that adhered during production, to achieve a smoother feel.

I prefer pieces with a sharp appearance, so the chamfering is shallow.

There are no noticeable scratches or dirt, but I will mention a few minor imperfections.

On the knight piece, there is an oil stain from the wood (orange area). This stain will become less noticeable over time as it is exposed to sunlight during use. The darker areas around it are the grain of the wood. (Images 17, 18)

Below the kin (gold piece) on the left, there is a shallow dent that is not visible in the photos, and a black spot that looks like a knot. I tried to polish it away, but it was deeper than I expected, and I was concerned about thinning the lines, so I stopped. (Image 19)

The dark areas are the wood grain.

The sticker on the piece box was dirty, so I removed it. There is a sunburn mark. It is not sticky.
