The mid-1980s, when this gun was released, was the height of the survival game boom. On weekends, many survival gamers would gather in riverbeds and wooded areas across the country to engage in intense battles.

As the boom grew, so did the diversity of participants. It was natural for beginner gamers, who were not necessarily long-time gun enthusiasts but were curious to try, to increase in number.

Many of these newcomers were not originally gun fans and had little interest in firearms themselves. For them, the ideal airsoft gun was one that could shoot BBs far and accurately, and allow for continuous firing. Additionally, ease of operation and a low price would have been ideal.

It was in this context that Maruzen's first gas gun, the S&W 44 Magnum, was introduced. It perfectly captured the needs of the era and became a huge hit, truly a gun designed for survival games. It's likely that every survival game team at the time had an attacker using this gun.
