Mosasaurus
Classification: Reptilia / Squamata / Mosasauridae
Size: Total length 12.5-18 meters
Era: Late Cretaceous
It was one of the largest in the Mosasauridae family, which flourished in the seas of the Late Cretaceous period. It was a marine reptile characterized by a crocodile-like head, a barrel-shaped, streamlined body, and four limbs that evolved into flippers.
Its head had a double-jointed jaw that could open wide, and it is believed to have swallowed its prey whole. Recent research on its close relative, Platecarpus, suggests it may have had a crescent-shaped tail fin similar to that of a shark.
