At Castañuelas Filigrana, we continue to uphold our tradition, says Lucía Álvarez Vera, granddaughter of master castanet craftsman Manuel Vera Martínez, known as Filigrana, and now the third-generation owner.

He invented fiber for castanets. From that time on, they began to be called 'Filigrana' (meaning delicate filigree work). The castanets he created are called 'Filigrana castanets,' so we decided to brand the inside of the castanets with that name. The 'Filigrana' trademark was registered in 1967, but the name had already been in use for many years.

Incorporating fiber into castanet manufacturing resulted in a stronger striking sound and increased durability, bringing about a major revolution in the history of castanets. He also invented a special technique for hollowing out the castanets, making them easier to play. (This is called a special resonance box.) Furthermore, he researched the origins of castanets for 40 years.

The Museum of Folk Arts of Seville features an exhibit titled Old Filigrana Workshop. On its walls hang photographs of top stars in the world of flamenco, including La Chunga, Carlitos Fernández Villarín, Juanita Reina, Caracolillo, Manuel Vargas, Merche Esmeralda, Pilar López, Lola Flores, Mariemma, Gitanillo de Bronce, and Rafael El Negro.
