Pegasus Single-Needle Lockstitch Sewing Machine
Overview
Single-needle lockstitch is a sewing method that does not use a bobbin. Unlike a flat stitch that tightens fabric together, this method creates a stretchy seam, making it suitable for hemming jeans, Japanese umbrellas, kimonos, and more.
This stitch was common in pre-war hand-crank and toy sewing machines, but is no longer in production. For industrial single-needle lockstitch machines, the industry competes for existing vintage machines, such as Yajima for hats, Union Special for jeans, and Pegasus for umbrellas.
Single-needle lockstitch machines are overwhelmingly fewer in number compared to flat stitch machines, and industrial models are typically owned by those who are highly skilled in their use, so they are not widely circulated. I purchased this one immediately when I was offered the opportunity.
I used single-needle lockstitch for basting because it is easy to undo. It was compact and easy to use, but I have too many sewing machines, so I am letting it go.
Condition
As this is a very old item, there are scuffs, scratches, and dirt from use, but it appears to be in good condition for its age.
It has been lubricated and cleaned, and operates smoothly without any unusual noises.
It came with a base (likely homemade) when I purchased it. It has an old motor, and the foot controller occasionally makes a buzzing sound, but it worked. The base has been adjusted to accommodate a general-purpose motor and belt.
I was able to sew as shown in the photos with some scrap fabric, without adjusting the tension.
When sewing with the tension set for thicker materials, it would catch and skip stitches, so it is likely that appropriate needles and thread are needed for thicker fabrics.
The underside of the machine has screw holes, allowing it to be fixed to a table and used seriously with an industrial motor. This is a great bargain for someone who can adjust and use it themselves.
As this is a used item, please check the photos for detailed condition. I am an amateur, so my descriptions may be inaccurate. Please refrain from purchasing if you are concerned about minor details or are sensitive.
It would also make a stylish display in a shop as a retro sewing machine. Its overwhelmingly compact size makes it approachable. Why not consider it as a secondary machine for everyday use?
Shipping is also included. If you do not need the base and motor, the shipping size will be smaller, and I will offer a discount of approximately 1500 yen.
