Normally, the process is catch fish ⇒ put in bucket or cooler box ⇒ fish weakens or dies ⇒ gut and take home weakened fish, or take home dead fish.
If you store the fish alive and then gut and bleed it before taking it home, the condition of the fish will be vastly different, and you can enjoy your catch more deliciously.
