This is a railway suspension insulator.
It is widely used in railway electrical equipment such as train overhead lines, high-voltage power distribution lines, and railway communication lines.
You often see them at stations.

There are two types of railway suspension insulators: 180mm and 250mm in diameter.
At first glance, the shape resembles that of a suspension insulator for power transmission lines, but the characteristic feature of a railway suspension insulator is that the tip of the metal fitting extending from under the cap is U-shaped.
For reference, suspension insulators for power transmission lines are larger, with diameters of 250mm, 280mm, 320mm, etc., and the metal fittings come in clevis and hole socket types, which are quite different from those for railways.
Railway suspension insulators are often used in pairs.
For example, on DC electrified lines of major private railways such as JR, Tokyu, and Hankyu, two railway suspension insulators are connected to insulate the high voltage of 1,500V while supporting the considerable weight of the current collection overhead lines.
They also insulate high-voltage power distribution lines for railways at 6,600V.
This suspension insulator is a used item purchased at a junk market held at a nearby temple.
There is a slightly large chipped damaged area on the rim of the insulator. (Please also see the image of the damaged area.)
There are also minor scratches and dirt remaining.
The metal fitting also has some rust.

This suspension insulator has a diameter of 180 mm and weighs approximately 4 kg.
