Description
In 1944 Albert Camus was not yet the Nobel laureate, not yet the philosopher the world would come to know. He was a journalist writing in secret for Combat — one of the most significant French Resistance newspapers of the war — at genuine personal risk, under occupation, in a country that had been asked to accept the unacceptable. These are those essays. Between Hell and Reason collects Camus's editorial and critical writing from Combat between 1944 and 1947 — a period that spans the final years of the occupation, the liberation of Paris, and the difficult moral reckoning of postwar Europe. What makes this collection remarkable is not simply that Camus wrote it under extraordinary circumstances, but that the writing itself holds up as literature. The essays move between journalism and philosophy, between the particular and the universal, with the clarity and moral seriousness that would define his later work. Reading them now is to understand where The Stranger, The Plague, and The Myth of Sisyphus came from — what pressure shaped them, what questions made them necessary. Published by Wesleyan University Press in 1991, this is the first edition — 182 pages, trade paperback, in good condition with minor wear. The spine is tight and the pages are clean. Follow Rising Tide for more carefully sourced books, fine art, and collectible finds.
