●What is Cherry Bark Lacquerware?
It was born about 200 years ago, during the Tenmei era, as a side job for lower-ranking samurai under the patronage of Lord Satake of Kakunodate Castle, and has been passed down to the present day.
Crafts made with cherry bark can be seen among the famous treasures of Shosoin, and can also be found in ancient literature such as the Manyoshu and The Tale of Genji.
Historically, it was used for items like bowstrings and sword scabbards.
It has the characteristic of preventing moisture and drying, and is particularly favored for tea caddies and smoking accessories.
Cherry bark lacquerware is an excellent craft representing Japanese folk art.
