Yakusugi refers to Japanese cedar trees on Yakushima Island that are over 1000 years old.
These trees are exceptionally beautiful due to their very clear grain and the distinctive sasame (bamboo leaf) pattern in the upper grain. They also have the characteristic of not warping despite their complex grain.
Because Yakushima's soil is poor and trees grow slowly, the annual rings are narrow and the wood grain is dense. It also has a high value due to its high resin content, making it resistant to rot.
Furthermore, it is said to have higher resistance to bacteria and insects than regular cedar.
Please feel free to inquire about anything else.
As this is a natural wood product, variations in color and cracks may be visible.
We ask for your understanding that these are natural characteristics of the wood before purchasing.
