Galileo, Courtier: The Practice of Science in the Culture of Absolutism by Mario Biagioli explores the intricate relationship between Galileo's scientific career and the patronage systems of the Medici court. Published by The University of Chicago Press, this scholarly work reinterprets Galileo's trajectory not just as a scientist, but as a courtier navigating the power dynamics of 17th-century Italy. The text delves into how courtly etiquette and the demands of prestige shaped his scientific methods and ultimately his trial. This hardcover edition features a detailed dust jacket illustrating Stefano della Bella's engraving of Hercules, adding a rich visual context to the historical analysis.
