Okamoto Gyokusui - Heian Nobleman (Fujiwara no Sadaie) - Antique Japanese Doll - Traditional Craft

This is a Kimekomi doll, exuding elegance, crafted by the master craftsman Gyokusui Okamoto.
I own several of Gyokusui's works, and each one has a unique way of painting the eyes. I feel this particular doll has exceptionally beautiful facial features.

✳ Design
A graceful, semi-standing pose that embodies the elegance of the Heian period. She holds a fan in her right hand, and her gaze directed downwards as if about to speak to someone.
Her face, painted with the hikime-kagi-hana (drawn eyes and hooked nose), a symbol of beauty among Heian nobles, is serene yet holds an intelligent radiance, reminiscent of the poet-sage, Fujiwara no Teika.
The costume is delicately hand-painted, showcasing Gyokusui's signature sophisticated aesthetic beauty that remains flawless from any angle.

✳ Condition
The face, layered with gofun (oyster shell powder), is glossy, and the painted hair strands are natural and exquisite.
There is a slight age-related discoloration on the forehead.
Additionally, there are cracks due to dryness under the left jaw and on both sides of the body. This is a testament to the natural materials breathing and aging over time. We have preserved its original texture without excessive repairs.
We hope to pass this on to someone who can appreciate its antique charm after reviewing the photos.

✳ Size
Height: Approx. 20cm

Place it in a corner of your study or on the tokonoma of a Japanese-style room. With just one of these dolls, the atmosphere of the space will instantly become tranquil, creating a luxurious ambiance that evokes thoughts of ancient Heian times.
