Gosho Dolls are considered the most prestigious among dolls and are derived from hitogata (human figures) with roots in the Heian period. Originally, they symbolized a substitute to take on misfortune in place of a person.
These are ornamental dolls made in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period.
They were displayed during celebrations such as imperial court events, births, and weddings.
With their three-head-to-body ratio, translucent white skin, plump limbs, and round physique, they represent abundance and are considered auspicious.
They are made of wood, with layers of gofun (a white pigment) repeatedly applied, polished, and finished to achieve beautiful white skin.
Heian Nishikizome
Toshio Fujiwara inherited the third generation of Heian Nishikizome.
For 80 years since his grandfather's generation, he has been creating Kyoto Dolls (Hina Dolls, Gogatsu Dolls) and ceramic Gosho Dolls and Kyoto Pottery Dolls.
He has received awards such as the Kyoto City Governor's Award and the Kyoto Mayor's Award at exhibitions organized by the Kyoto Pottery Doll Cooperative Association.
