What is a Tōrei Doll?
In 1927, over 12,000 Blue-Eyed Dolls were sent from the United States to Japan with the wish for friendship and goodwill between Japan and the United States. They were distributed to kindergartens and elementary schools across the country, creating significant social excitement.
In return, Japan sent Ichimatsu Dolls to the United States as Tōrei Dolls.
The dolls, named after various places in Japan such as Miss Tokyo and Miss Yokohama, were enthusiastically welcomed throughout the United States as goodwill envoys of peace, and then each was enshrined in art museums and museums in various states.
(Excerpt from Yoshitoku)
