Genkichi Saito (1885-1964)
Style: Zao Kōyu
Master: Matsuji Saito
Disciples: Genshichi Saito / Rikizo Hashimoto / Atsuo Tanaka / Takeshi Suzuki

[Biography] Born on May 1, 1885, in Zao Kōyu, Yamagata Prefecture. Eldest son of Chūji Saito, a sake brewer, and Ito. Chūji was the younger brother of Katsuji, Matsuji Saito's father. The Saito family's business was the production of the famous sake Otokoyama until 1888. Genkichi's younger sisters, Matsu and Tsume, married Eisaku Okazaki of Notoya and Kyūtarō Brother, respectively.
Graduated from Horita Village Third Elementary School in 1896. In 1903, at the age of 17, he began training in wood turning under his cousin Matsuji. His junior apprentice was Kakushiro Ichizawa. In 1905, he enlisted in the Hirosaki Field Artillery Regiment and was discharged in 1907. In October 1911, he married Shi, the fifth daughter of Kumazo Yamada of Narusawa, and the following year, his eldest son Genshichi was born.
In 1913, his house was partially damaged by a flood in Zao Kōyu. At this time, he rebuilt his home and established a new factory, beginning to engage in wood turning in earnest. Until then, he had been turning wood at Matsuji's factory.
In 1918, he was mobilized to Siberia and returned after about 6 months. In 1920, Rikizo Hashimoto became his disciple and left for Yonezawa to establish his own business in 1940. In 1938, he opened the Midoriya Souvenir Shop.
He was introduced as an author in Kokeshi Iho by Bunsaku Tachibana and was also featured in Kokeshi Dansō as a promising new author.
In 1950, his only son, Genshichi, died of illness. Around 1952, he instructed Takeshi Suzuki, who came from Yonezawa, in wood turning. In 1953, he was involved in the founding of the Yamagata Kokeshi Association. In 1955, Takeshi Suzuki became his disciple, followed by Atsuo Tanaka in 1957. After the war, he served as an executive of the Suikawa Onsen Shrine and contributed to local activities, including efforts to develop Zao skiing.
He was extremely gentle and sincere, with the dignified bearing of an elder. After the age of 70, he began adding the character 寿 (kotobuki - longevity) between the floral patterns on the body. He also enjoyed haiku and would sometimes attach his own poems to his Kokeshi dolls, such as:

Wandering to see autumn leaves, mindful of borrowed clothes.
The borrowed clothes are long, then short, under the winter moon.
Bored with playing house, I sleep beside a Kokeshi doll.

He passed away on December 21, 1964, at the Yamagata Saiseikai Hospital at the age of 80. His farewell ceremony was held on January 24, 1965, at Yuhoji Temple in Yamagata City, and a memorial discussion was held by the Yamagata Kokeshi Association.
