This is a 9.5-inch (29cm) hand-painted satin ornamental Kyoto fan from Ito Tsune Hanbai. The design features a vibrant hand-painted cherry blossom Kinkaku and a maiko (apprentice geisha). The frame is black lacquered with maki-e (gold lacquer decoration), creating a luxurious atmosphere.
These fans, also known as satin or silk fans, were widely produced as export items from the late Edo period to the mid-Taisho period. However, due to a decrease in the number of craftspeople, there are now few shops in Kyoto that handle them. These gorgeous silk fans remain consistently popular among foreign tourists visiting Kyoto, who continue to purchase them.
