Shōha Sōma Enmon (Shōha Double Horse Round Pattern)
The ancient Japanese word for horse, uma, has existed in Japan since antiquity, with kanji characters arriving much later.
Large horses were introduced to Japan around the Kofun period. Because they were larger than native Japanese horses, they were called ōma (large horse), and this is believed to be the origin of the word uma.
Around the 8th-9th centuries, brocade fabrics from Central Asia featured two adorned horses.
The pearl-bordered pattern, also found in fabrics from Hōryū-ji Temple and Shōsō-in Treasure House.
We have created this Shōha weave featuring two spirited and charming horses.
