Ubaguchi Hiragama, made by Seiemon Onishi (Josetsu) of the 10th generation, with original box
This is an Ubaguchi Hiragama by the 10th generation Onishi Jōsetsu, with a shared box.
The inscription reads San'emon, which refers to the period when Jōsetsu used his maternal Okuhira surname before inheriting the Onishi family name.
While San'emon is more famously associated with the Kigoshi family, the seal is Okuhira's and closely resembles the Okuhira seal on the shared box of his younger brother Ryōho.
Furthermore, the handwriting is Jōsetsu's characteristic neat script.
This piece is from his younger years, featuring a wide mouth and bold, energetic feather drop.
It has a similar skin and ring attachment to his father, Jōgen.
The period he used the name San'emon was short, and few shared boxes from this time remain, making this piece valuable as a record of Jōsetsu's early work.
We filled it with water for a while, and confirmed there were no leaks.

[Onishi Jōsetsu]
10th generation Onishi Seiemon. He first used the name Okuhira San'emon, then Onishi Seiemon, and finally Jōsetsu.
While he created the characteristic wabi kettles favored by the Sen family, he also produced a diverse range of kettles, including Ashiya replicas and technically intricate pieces.
He was renowned as an appraiser with a keen eye, leaving behind many accurate assessments. He also researched ancient kettles from Echizen Ashiya, Ise Ashiya, and other regions.
