Product Description
This is an elegant teakettle with a refined patina of age.
The body is adorned with a picturesque pine tree landscape pattern, and the aged iron surface and form evoke the deep flavor reminiscent of Ashiya kettles.

There is rust inside consistent with age, but there are no water leaks.
(The description is based on my personal opinion; I am an antique enthusiast, not an expert.)

[Reference: What is an Ashiya Kettle?]
Ashiya kettles are tea ceremony kettles made in Ashiya-tsu Kanaya, Chikuzen Province (near Nakanohama, Ashiya Town, Onga District, Fukuoka Prefecture) from around the Southern and Northern Dynasties period (mid-14th century). The refined Shinari (true form) shape and the elegant patterns on the body were favored by the nobility in Kyoto, making them highly coveted. Although their production ceased around the early Edo period, Ashiya kettles continue to be a centerpiece in modern tea ceremonies and are highly treasured.
Out of the 9 tea ceremony kettles designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, 8 are Ashiya kettles.

Characteristics of Ashiya Kettles
1. Mouth: Kurikuchi (the rising part of the mouth is curved).
2. Rings: Generally Kiemen (demon face). The Kiemen shape resembles a dragon's head with a stern expression. Over time, other forms such as lion faces and turtles also appeared.
3. Feather around the body. The feather is the part that hangs over the brazier.
4. Many old Ashiya kettles show damage to the bottom due to long-term use, and some have had their bottoms replaced or their feathers chipped off.
5. The surface is smooth and is called Namazuhada (catfish skin) because it resembles the skin of a catfish.
6. Patterns are depicted on the body. There are various patterns such as landscapes, animals, plants, and geometric designs. Some also have a background pattern of arale (hailstones). Very rarely, works inscribed with the donor, donation year, or maker's name can be found.
