Cast Iron Ebisu Water Pitcher

Cast Iron Ebisu Water Pitcher
This piece is a cast iron water pitcher shaped like Ebisu. Ebisu is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, and has been worshipped since ancient times as the god of fishing and business prosperity. His gentle smile and plump cheeks are imbued with wishes for happiness and good fortune.

This water pitcher was once used as a tool for grinding ink when writing with a brush. Water is poured into the small hole in the mouth, and an appropriate amount of water is dropped onto the inkstone (suzuri) while grinding the ink. It is a traditional tool used by literati and calligraphers, and is a piece that emphasizes practicality while also serving as a decorative item.

Judging by the old design and signs of aging, it is estimated to be from the mid-Showa period (1950) or earlier. In particular, cast iron water pitchers for brushes were sometimes favored by old calligraphers and temples.
