Description
Tanzaku Box for Tea Ceremony (Box Only)

Tanzaku Box with Latch
(A latch is a fastener or bolt for doors, gates, windows, etc., and is a mechanical component that supports the holding and releasing of doors in a closed state and prevents accidental opening.)

A Tanzaku Box (Tanzaku-bako) is a narrow, vertical, portable tea-making cabinet for powdered green tea, featuring a Kendon lid (a type of lid attached to the side of the box that opens and closes) and three shelves inside.
The bottom board is designed to hold a lid rest, and it is used with a flat Kensui (a vessel for discarding hot or cold water used to rinse tea bowls in a tea ceremony). The first shelf holds a Mizusashi (water container), the second shelf holds a Chawan (tea bowl), and the third shelf holds a Natsume (tea caddy). A Hishaku (ladle) is hung in the notch on the left side.
The name comes from the practice of attaching a Tanzaku (a strip of paper for calligraphy or painting) to the back of the Kendon lid, which is opened towards the guest for use in outdoor tea ceremonies, and it is also called a Tanzaku Dansu (Tanzaku Cabinet).
